SUMMARY:Flora\, Fauna\, and Family Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is a survey of works by the late Gladys M Lux. Her grandmother began her art education by teaching her china painting\, and she also learned to paint in watercolors and draw. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nebraska\, Ms. Lux began teaching art at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln\, Nebraska\, in 1927. During the forty years she taught at Nebraska Wesleyan University\, she inspired many students to believe as she did that “there is an artist in everyone.” \nTalented as both an artist and educator\, her collection of over 450 prints is on view year-round to continue its initial purpose of bringing world-class art to the people of Nebraska. The LUX Print Gallery is located on the second floor of the Lux Center for the Arts. Gallery hours are 12 – 6PM\, Tuesday – Friday and 10AM – 5PM on Saturday.

SUMMARY:Memory Serves: Drawing Others Close - International Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This symposium seeks to illuminate how the synthesis of the arts\, humanities and social sciences and medicine can reframe perspectives on care of the elderly in ways that can challenge\, stimulate and nurture fresh thinking\, dialogue and connections. Moreover\, it will explore how they can play a pivotal role in addressing the challenges and rewards of caring for the elderly and of caregiver and health professional burnout and wellbeing. \nPaintings will also be on display in the UNO Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center  August 26 to September 29. These paintings were created by people living with dementia as part of the Opening Minds through Art (OMA) program delivered at the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home. The art program is aimed at promoting residents social engagement\, autonomy\, and dignity through the experience of creative self-expression. Elders at Rose Blumkin Jewish Home were paired with a trained student volunteer from the University of Nebraska Omaha who provided guidance during the art-making process. \nThe event features geriatrician Dr. Kenneth Rockwood and film-maker Hannah Minzloff. Dr. Rockwood is a professor of medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, who was last year’s winner of the Ryman Prize for the world’s best discovery\, development\, advance or achievement that enhances quality of life for older people. Hannah Minzloff is a Canadian filmmaker. Her critically acclaimed film\, “Dementia\, Dad and Me” will be broadcast nationwide in Canada this summer. \nThe event is free\, but registration is required.

SUMMARY:Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte documentary film
DESCRIPTION:A special FREE SCREENING of the documentary DR. SUSAN LA FLESCHE PICOTTE followed by a Q&A\, presented by the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs and co-sponsored by the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. \nThe first Native American to become a physician\, Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte\, fought hard for the health\, wellness\, and spiritual and cultural lives of her Omaha people. She was a doctor\, healer\, teacher\, and so much more. Over 100 years after her death\, her legacy still continues as many Indigenous women look to her for inspiration and follow in her footsteps. On Indigenous People’s Day in 2021\, a statue of her likeness was erected on Centennial Mall in Lincoln\, Nebraska. Next to her sculpture reads her words\, “I shall always fight good and hard\, even if I have to fight alone.” \nThe Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte documentary was made in partnership with The Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs and also partially funded by Humanities Nebraska and special donors Jane L. Johnson and Joan Desens. \nFollowing the 30-minute screening\, there will be a Q&A with panelists Ingrid Holmquist\, Susan Picotte\, Larry Small\, and Judi gaiashkibos. \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:Dr. Sheryl Lightfoot: Reconciliation in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sheryl Lightfoot will speak on reconciliation efforts in Canada as part of the Center for Great Plains Studies’ year-long focus on reckoning and reconciliation in the Great Plains. The talk is titled “An Invitation to Boldness: UNDRIP as the Framework for Reconciliation in Canada.” This event is presented in partnership with the Consulate General of Canada in Minneapolis\, which represents Canada in Nebraska\, Iowa\, Minnesota\, North Dakota\, and South Dakota. September  30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. \nIn its 2015 final report\, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada issued an invitation to boldness\, calling on all levels of government and civil society to fully implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in Canada. By linking reconciliation exclusively to the implementation of the UNDRIP\, the collective vision of what is possible has significantly expanded\, and many sectors of Canadian government and society have embraced this opportunity for transformative thinking. \nLightfoot (Anishinaabe\, Lake Superior Band) is Canada Research Chair of Global Indigenous Rights and Politics at the University of British Columbia\, where she holds faculty appointments in Political Science and the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs as well as an association with the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies. She serves as the Vice Chair and North American Member on the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) as well as Senior Advisor to the UBC President on Indigenous Affairs\, where she is the lead on UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan and directs the Office of Indigenous Strategic Initiatives. She is currently President of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA). Her research focuses on Indigenous global politics\, especially Indigenous rights and their implementation in global\, national and regional contexts. \nThis event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies is an 8-panel traveling exhibit sharing historical snapshots of one of the oldest Black Studies departments in the nation. The exhibit highlights the department’s civil rights origins\, attempts to downgrade the department to a program\, and the mutual engagement between campus and community. The banners share archival materials such as newspaper clippings\, department documents\, and photos chronicling events from the 1969 campus sit-in to the celebration of the “Omaha 54” student activists 52 years later. The history of the Department of Black Studies has been characterized by a constant struggle for survival\, but also by the enduring engagement and support of the Omaha Black community.

DESCRIPTION:A new play by Becky Boesen\, commissioned by History Nebraska\, inspired by the life of Clarence Williams \n“It’s almost unbelievable that anyone could be hardened to the point of doing the brutal things they did…” A young man from the midwest is sent to war\, carrying with him the hopes of the free world. What Staff Sergeant Clarence Williams encounters there challenges and changes humanity forever. History touches the present when a new generation takes a journey through time to experience World War II alongside Clarence himself. Centered around his personal letters home\, we learn that sometimes what seems so far away is much closer than we think. Filled with hope and heart\, Not Too Far Distant honors the experience of the American soldier and reminds us that we all have the power – and the responsibility – to help create a brighter future. \nThe performance will be followed by a scholar-led conversation on Nebraska and holocaust history. \nTickets are required – $12/adult\, $7/youth\, free admission for veterans and auxiliary members – and may be purchased here.
