DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nExplore how food can help you write more vivid\, emotionally layered poems of grief\, memory\, and longing. In this generative workshop\, writers will use meals\, cooking\, and shared rituals to open new pathways into elegy\, deepen personal memory\, and draft new work in a supportive space. \nPreeti Vangani is a poet & writer from Bombay based in San Francisco. She is the author of the poetry collections\, Mother Tongue Apologize (2019) and Fifty Mothers\, (River River Books\, 2026). Her work has appeared in AGNI\, The Georgia Review\, Gulf Coast\, Prairie Schooner among other places. Her debut short story won the 2021 Pen/Dau Emerging Writers Prize. Vangani has been a resident at UCross\, Djerassi and Ragdale. She has received artist grants from San Francisco Arts Commission\, YBCA\, and The Barbara Deming Memorial Fund. She holds an MFA in Writing from University of San Francisco and teaches in the program.

SUMMARY:In Search of the Signers Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On July 4\, 1776\, the Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. Collectors of early United States history long pursued a complete set of signatures of the 56 men who boldly signed the document. Omaha’s first real estate agent\, Byron Reed\, assembled one of the nation’s most important collections of coinage and manuscripts. Reed also sought a signature from each signer\, and today\, the Byron Reed Collection includes documents related to 49 of the 56 signers. \nThe Durham Museum is proud to preserve and feature it in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States. Join us for an evening of poems that are poignant\, quirky\, and unexpectedly warm. \nBrad Aaron Modlin came to Nebraska to be a professor/The Reynolds Endowed Chair of Creative Writing at University of Nebraska\, Kearney and teach undergraduates & in the online creative writing master’s program. The sandhill cranes were a bonus! His internationally viral poetry has been experienced two million times. His book Everyone at This Party Has Two Names is available from Black Lawrence Press. His work appears in the Pushcart Prize anthology; Brevity; Poetry Unbound; The Slowdown; & The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Also orchestral scores\, Australian art galleries\, Brooklyn public art\, and his grampa’s refrigerator. He has received support from the Banff Centre\, Sewanee Writer’s Conference\, & the Nebraska Arts Council. He likes talking with strangers and asking friends to share examples of hope.

DESCRIPTION:Screening and Q&A with Directors Brenda Fisher and Blake Pickens\, moderated by Georgiana Lee. \nat Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center \nThis documentary follows Colville Tribe Chief’ Marchand Rice’s nearly 40-year path toward redemption while examining the disproportionate incarceration of Native Americans and a justice system that often punishes trauma without addressing its roots. Featuring intimate interviews with tribal leaders\, attorneys\, and those impacted by Chief’s mentorship\, the film is both a critique of the American justice system and a celebration of Indigenous traditions of healing\, accountability\, and restoration. \nSponsored by Vision Maker Media \nDetails: https://theross.org/film/nafs-reservation-redemption/ \nBrenda Fisher is a Los Angeles-based director\, executive producer\, talent manager\, and social justice advocate. As a Yakama Descendant growing up on the reservation has instilled in Brenda a deep appreciation for diversity\, making her a staunch advocate for ensuring a varied client base. Her commitment to inclusivity and understanding of different cultural perspectives enriches her approach to talent management\, fostering environments where everyone can thrive. Brenda also prides herself on the relationships she builds with her clients as she truly cares about their success. She produces the “Reservation Redemption” YouTube Channel which supports the documentary. Brenda executive produced Native American lore horror-thriller The Windigo\, currently streaming on Prime\, VUDU\, and Apple TV. \nBlake Pickens is an Emmy Award winning Chickasaw comedian and filmmaker. Blake began his career writing satire for The National Lampoon\, where he published numerous featured articles. He is a part of A Tribe Called Sketch\, the first all Native American sketch show on a US Second City Stage. He can be seen performing standup all over LA. Blake was selected for the Time Warner Sundance Native Producing Lab and Fellowship and the Sundance Producing Fellowship for his film The Land. The film premiered in 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically by IFC Films. Blake has produced content with a focus on diversity and inclusion\, ranging from feature films to commercials and music videos. He has produced commercials that won a Grand Prix at Cannes Lions two years in a row (2017\, 2018) and won a 2018 Emmy for his P&G commercial The Talk. He also won an MTV VMA for his work on John Legend’s music video Surefire. His second feature film as a producer\, Wild Indian\, with Michael Greyeyes and Jesse Eisenberg premiered at Sundance 2021. Blake was also selected for the inaugural 2020 Sundance Indigenous Intensive for his comedy pilot\, The Wildest West\, which was also selected for the Black List’s Indigenous List. \nGeorgiana Lee\, a proud member of the Diné (Navajo) tribe\, holds a Bachelor’s in Journalism and Theater from Creighton University in Omaha\, Nebraska. Her career in non-profit and public media has largely focused on helping Indigenous filmmakers navigate the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) to achieve national broadcast. In 2006\, she received the University of Nebraska—Omaha’s Woman of Color Youth Leadership Award for her collaborative media projects that brought positive messaging to Omaha’s communities of color. Join us for an evening of poems that reflect on home\, time\, and the ways we grow into our best selves. \nMark Sanders is a Nebraska native\, born in Creighton and raised on the eastern rim of the Sandhills at Ord. Among his books of poetry are The Suicide (1988)\, Before We Lost Our Ways (1996)\, Here in the Big Empty (2006)\, Conditions of Grace: New and Selected Poems (2011)\, Landscapes\, with Horses (2018)\, and In a Good Time (2019).  The latter two books received Nebraska Book Awards; Landscapes\, with Horses was awarded the 2019 Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.  His edited works include A Sandhills Reader: 30 Years of Great Writing from the Great Plains and The Weight of the Weather: Regarding the Poetry of Ted Kooser\, both recipients of the Nebraska Book Award\, in 2016 and 2018 respectively.  In 2007\, he was awarded the Mildred Bennett Award for fostering Nebraska’s literary heritage.  His most recent book is Homecoming Parade:  Memoir  (2024)\, and his next book of poems\, The Messiah Horse:  Poems…

DESCRIPTION:The Hills We Share explores the history of Southside Terrace\, Jetter’s Depot\, and South Omaha through historic documents\, photographs\, and artifacts. The exhibit features original 1939 architectural drawings of Southside Terrace on trace paper\, correspondence from the Housing Authority\, newspaper clippings from the 1930s and 1940s\, and historic photos courtesy of The Durham Museum. Together\, these materials offer a glimpse into the people\, places\, and decisions that shaped the neighborhood—and invite us to reflect on the connections between South Omaha’s past and future. \nTours of this exhibit in the community space at Jetter’s Depot are available by appointment Tuesday through Friday\, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information call or email 402-916-9293  or etienne@canopysouth.org

Through stirring music\, rich humor\, and moving storytelling\, this uplifting production celebrates the power of kindness and human connection in the face of tragedy.
