SUMMARY:Bison exhibit at University of Nebraska State Museum Morrill Hall
DESCRIPTION:BISON – a traveling exhibit exploring the past\, present\, and future of this great North American mammal – will be at the University of Nebraska State Museum Morrill Hall from November 8 through May 31. \nThe exhibit explores the significance of bison in the cultures of Plains Indian peoples–particularly as a resource for food\, clothing\, shelter and tools. That co-existence changed dramatically with the closing of the frontier that brought new settlers with livestock to compete for grass and water during a time of climate and habitat change. These developments were exacerbated by the commodification of the bison as hide and bone in late nineteenth century industrialization. The most recent chapter of the bison story is both significant and complex: the romance of rescuing and preserving bison; the science of genetic diversity within the species; the dynamics of poachers\, profiteers\, and producers both industrial and small-scale; marketing bison fiber and meat to the 21st century customer. The exhibit highlights the role of the National Buffalo Foundation in bringing together a community of stakeholders to celebrate and promote the bison’s heritage and to raise awareness of that story. \nThe museum is open Tuesday – Saturday 9:00am – 5:00pm and Sunday 12:00pm – 5:00pm\nMorrill Hall is closed on Mondays and select holidays (January 1\, July 4\, Thanksgiving Day\, December 24 & 25). \nMuseum admission: $13.00\, Children (ages 3-11) $7.50\, under 3 FREE\nMuseums for All (with SNAP\, EBT\, or WIC Card) $1.00\nMuseum Members\, UNL NCard Holders\, ASTC Members\, Blue Star (active-duty military\, guard\, reserves & families with ID) FREE\n*A $1 discount is available for Seniors (65+)\, or Active/Veteran Military (with ID) on regular admission

SUMMARY:The Negro Motorist Green Book exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Negro Motorist Green Book offers an immersive look at the reality of travel for African Americans in mid-century America\, and how the annual guide served as an indispensable resource for the nation’s rising African American middle class. The exhibition includes artifacts such as historic footage\, images and firsthand accounts to convey not only the apprehension felt by African American travelers\, but also the resilience\, innovation and elegance of people fighting to live a full American existence. It will bring focus to a vibrant parallel world of African American businesses\, the rise of the Black leisure class in the United States and the important role The Green Book played in facilitating the second wave of the Great Migration. \nThe Green Book was published and distributed nationwide from 1936 until 1967\, providing African American travelers with information on restaurants\, gas stations\, department stores and other businesses that welcomed Black travelers. In an era of Jim Crow laws and “sundown towns\,” The Green Book offered critical\, life-saving information and sanctuary. \nMuseum hours: Sunday\, Noon – 4PM; Tuesday-Saturday; 10AM-4PM; closed Mondays. \nAdmission free for members\, $15 for adults\, with discounts for seniors\, military members and veterans\, and children. \n

DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Crown & Stage: The Monarchy and Shakespeare in Quilts” will open during the free April First Friday event at the International Quilt Museum. Co-Curated by Dr. Carole Levin\, Willa Cather Emerita Professor of History at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln\, “Crown & Stage” explores how quilts and other forms of material culture traveled beyond the playhouse and palace. This exhibition features quilts honoring British queens\, Shakespeare’s words stitched in fabric\, and contemporary objects that reinterpret these icons. \nThe opening will feature a special reading of poetry on queens and Shakespeare from “Creatively Expanding the Premodern” with authors Carole Levin\, Marguerite A. Tassi\, Christine Stewart-Nuñez\, and Julia Griffin.

DESCRIPTION:The free monthly Nebraska Poets Reading Series highlights the talent of Nebraska poets and invites discussion with audience members. His poems draw on pop culture\, memory\, and faith\, revealing both humor and heart in the ordinary and extraordinary. \nTodd Robinson is the author of Mass for Shut-Ins (University of Nebraska Press\, 2018) and Note at Heart Rock (Main Street Rag\, 2012). His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in The Adroit Journal\, Rattle\, North American Review\, and Rhino. He is an Associate Professor in the Writer’s Workshop at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and caregiver to his partner\, a disabled physician.

DESCRIPTION:Every second Monday evening of each month\, Vision Maker Media and The Ross Media Arts Center present free in-person public screenings that feature Native American films by and about Native Americans and Alaska Natives. The Native American Film Series showcases stories about cultural heritage\, art\, history\, music\, civic leadership\, youth\, and more. Please verify screening time with the theater. \nScha’nexw Elhtal’nexw Salmon People: Preserving a Way of Life is an hour-long documentary inspired by the late Chexanexwh Larry Kinley\, a Lummi fisherman and tribal leader who embodied a belief in tribal sovereignty. The film follows two Lummi families fishing for sockeye. As they come to grips with a depleting fishery\, Larry asks: “Who Are We Without Salmon?” Celebrating the resilience and adaptive natures of salmon and the people\, the film is a reflection on a spiritual life way centered on respect and gratitude for salmon. \nThe screening will be followed by a Q&A with Tah-Mahs Ellie Kinley moderated by Patrick O’Meara. \nTah-Mahs Ellie Kinley is a commercial fisher who comes from a family where every single generation since time immemorial has harvested the Salish Sea. Additionally\, she is President of the Sacred Lands Conservancy\, a Native-led non-profit committed to the protection of the Salish Sea; an elected member of Lummi Nations Fisheries and Natural Resource Commission; a former contractor for Lummi Nation’s Sovereignty and Treaty Protection Office; a founding board member of SeaFeast; and a member of the Working Waterfront Coalition. She is an Executive Producer on the feature documentary Resident Orca\, the story of the captive orca Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut (Tokitae/Lolita)\, and is co-author of the bilingual Xwlemi Chosen (Lummi language) / English children’s book Sa’Le Q’ewet Netse’lh / Our Hearts Beat as One. \nPatrick O’Meara joined Vision Maker Media in 2024 as Cultural Education Director. Prior to Vision Maker Media\, Pat served seven years as the Social Studies Teacher Leader for Lincoln Public Schools (NE)\, directing curriculum and assessment for nearly 200 K-12 social studies teachers and co-teaching the first-year tenure course for new social studies educators. Before his district office role\, Pat served twenty-six years as a classroom teacher. Pat holds a bachelor’s degree in history and English and a master’s degree in Historical Studies. At Vision Maker Media\, Pat curates’ Indian education programs for VMM’s iNative Shorts for Kids YouTube channel and PBS Learning Media\, supporting VMM’s standing as the premier national media source for and about Native Americans. Pat also develops and presents educational sessions at national conferences such as National Indian Education Association\, National Educational Television Association\, National Council on Social Studies\, and research on a new Native media project about Indigenous science.

SUMMARY:2026 Great Plains Literacy Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Great Plains Literacy Festival will feature five authors and illustrators of children’s books: Deborah Hopkinson\, Melissa Iwai\, Oge Mora\, David Ezra Stein\, and Lindsey Stoddard. \nThese authors will reach thousands of students in their schools in east central Nebraska over two days\, culminating in the community event that’s open to the public on April 23 from 4-6 p.m. in downtown Seward\, with the authors available for a meet and greet at Chapters Books and Gifts\, 548 Seward St\, Seward\, NE 68434. \nFor more information\, visit https://www.greatplainsliteracyfestival.com. \nA native of Lowell\, Massachusetts\, Deborah Hopkinson is the award-winning author of seventy books for young readers including picture books\, middle grade historical fiction\, Little Golden Book biographies\, and long form nonfiction. \nMelissa Iwai is an author and illustrator of children’s books\, based in Brooklyn\, NY. She has illustrated over 30 books and has even written and illustrated many of her own! \nOge Mora is a collage artist and storyteller. Her picture book\, Thank You\, Omu!\, was a Caldecott Honor\, Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award winner\, and Ezra Jack Keats Book Award recipient. \nAward winning author and illustrator David Ezra Stein was born in Brooklyn\, NY. By the time he was three\, he was asking adults\, “Wanna come to my room? Read books?” This love of reading grew into a love of telling stories\, and then\, writing. \nLindsey Stoddard is a Vermont-born and raised author of beloved middle-grade novels including Just Like Jackie\, Right as Rain\, Brave Like That\, Bea Is for Blended\, and The Real Deal.

DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Urban Word\, the Nebraska Writers Collective is hosting the National Youth Poet Laureate Commencement. This marks the first time Nebraska has welcomed this national event. \nThe evening will feature performances from the four National Youth Poet Laureate finalists from across the country\, alongside a reading by the 2025 Nebraska Youth Poet Laureate\, Evan Wang. The program will be hosted by Nebraska State Poet Jewel Rodgers and accompanied by DJ Errik Ejike. \nSince limited seating is available\, registration is required to attend in person. The event will also be livestreamed on YouTube.
