SUMMARY:Popol Vuh: The Sacred Book of the Quiché through Illustration
DESCRIPTION:Popol Vuh: The Sacred Book of the Quiché through Illustration is an exhibit that features a series of illustrations by artist Jaime Arredondo\, with the hope of restoring the former glory of the Popol Vuh and its authors to its deserved place in human history. The artist’s hope is that this will lead to a greater interest and defense of the stories\, art\, and culture of Native and Indigenous people. \nAccording to the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian: \nThe Popol Vuh\, or Popol Wuj in the K’iche’ language\, is the story of creation of the Maya. Members of the royal K’iche’ lineages that had once ruled the highlands of Guatemala recorded the story in the 16th century to preserve it under the Spanish colonial rule. The Popol Vuh\, meaning “Book of the Community\,” narrates the Maya creation account\, the tales of the Hero Twins\, and the K’iche’ genealogies and land rights. \nSee museum website for current information about opening hours and admission. \nMuseum Hours:\nWednesday\, Thursday\, & Friday 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\nSaturday 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. \nAdmission:\nMembers Free\nGeneral Admission $5.00\nCollege Students with ID $4.00\nStudents K-12 $3.50\nSenior Citizens $3.50\nChildren under 5 Free\nActive Military with ID* Free\n*El Museo Latino is a Blue Star Museum

SUMMARY:Beyond Combat: World War I through the Lens of "Doc" Cook
DESCRIPTION:R.H. “Doc” Cook\, a photographer who enlisted during World War I\, served with the 88th Division\, 313th Engineers and captured the company’s experiences with his camera. A century later\, local resident Mollie Anderson purchased a case that had belonged to Cook. The case contained his original photographic negatives. After researching Cook’s life and displaying some of the images at Gallery 92 West in 2022\, she donated the entire set to The Durham Museum. \nBeyond Combat: World War I Through the Lens of Doc Cook is a temporary exhibition developed by The Durham Museum. Through photos curated from Cook’s collection\, it tells the story of the 313th Engineers from their training at Camp Dodge until the completion of their deployment in May 1919. Their story highlights military jobs that contributed to the war effort beyond the traditionally understood duties of combat. The military engineers that “Doc” served with were responsible for repairing roads\, building bridges\, laying track\, improving dugouts and shelters and assisting in the restoration of war-torn regions. Plans for the exhibition also include a small theater area\, with seating\, featuring additional images in which guests are invited to linger with “Doc” Cook’s images and immerse themselves in the 313th Engineers’ experience. \nAdmission (not including tax): Adults: $15\, Seniors (62+): $12\, Military/Veteran: $12\, Children (ages 3 – 12): $8\, Children 2 years and under FREE. \nMuseum hours: Sunday Noon – 4PM\, Monday through Saturday 10AM – 4PM\, closed major holidays.

SUMMARY:OurStory exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The “OurStory: Creating Aging-Ready Housing” exhibition by the University of Nebraska College of Architecture’s FACT Studio\, takes aim at the housing crisis and aging population with a new concept for infill housing and accessory dwellings in the Omaha metro and beyond. \nThe exhibition focuses on a new housing product\, also called OurStory\, that was designed during a Fall 2024 semester-long process by 13 graduate-level architecture students who are members of FACT (Fabrication And Construction Team) a collaborative student designbuild studio at the University of Nebraska College of Architecture. The project is under the mentorship of Jeffrey L. Day\, FAIA\, Professor of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and founding partner of Actual Architecture Company. The OurStory exhibit explores project design goals and the process used to create the broadly applicable housing system. \n“Affordable housing occurs at the intersection of policy\, finance\, and design\,” Jeffrey Day said. “The focus of this exhibition is on design\, informed by the other two realms. OurStory argues for a repair of the single-family house to address housing needs in existing neighborhoods\, vacant odd-lots\, new dense developments\, to accommodate aging in place\, and to uncover new opportunities for the home.” \n“We are designing for the needs of an aging population because it benefits every person and every neighborhood to consider older adults an asset\, and to keep seniors close to the communities and people they love for as long as possible\,” said Jessica Scheuerman\, founder and executive director of Livable Omaha. “Everyone wins if we have more options for aging-ready ADUs and infill housing.” \nThe exhibit will run from December 16 through January 10 and will be viewable during the Dundee Bank’s operating hours\, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nArchitect Jeffrey L. Day\, FAIA\, will give a gallery talk on January 3 during BFF Omaha’s First Friday art walk.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: Jessica Poli
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nHow do the landscapes we’ve lived in shape the way we think\, feel\, and create? In Crossing Open Ground\, Barry Lopez suggests that “the shape of the individual mind is affected by land as it is by genes.” There is a profound connection between our inner lives and the physical spaces we inhabit. In this generative workshop\, we will consider the ways the physical world influences our interior landscapes\, and how those interior landscapes\, in turn\, might shape our poems. Through guided prompts\, reflective discussion\, and close readings of place-inspired poems\, you’ll learn to translate your experiences of land — whether wide-open spaces\, urban corners\, or intimate settings — into vivid\, textured poetry. \nJESSICA POLI is the author of Red Ocher (University of Arkansas Press)\, which was a finalist for the 2023 Miller Williams Prize. Her work has appeared in Best New Poets\, North American Review\, Poet Lore\, and Salamander\, among other places. She is currently a PhD student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln\, where she is an Associate Editor for Prairie Schooner.

SUMMARY:The People's Recorder: A Creative Incubator
DESCRIPTION:The People’s Recorder is a national podcast on the 1930s Federal Writers’ Project: what it achieved\, where it fell short\, and what it means for Americans today. An episode about Nebraska is now available. \nEpisode Summary \nIn the 1930s\, the notion of making an incubator for creativity in a region devastated by the Great Depression got tested in Nebraska. This episode looks at what happened there when the Writers’ Project came to town\, through a group of creatives from contrasting backgrounds\, including a hobo\, a nurse and a hardware store poet – all under the watchful eye of a university professor and a celebrated novelist. \nStarting from chaos\, they ignited a surprising alchemy and made the Lincoln office one of the most productive Writers’ Project hubs in the country. The Season 1 finale listens in as Americans face war clouds on the horizon\, and a national radio show asks\, “Can we count on youth to uphold the American Way?” \nListen to episode 10\, A Creative Incubator\, on their website\, or on your favorite podcast platform. \nApple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-peoples-recorder/id1693003215\nAcast: https://shows.acast.com/peoples-recorder\nSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/72IK20V1a7nNhhbehGBIYm?si=479e79a135be4187\nAudible: https://www.amazon.com/The-Peoples-Recorder/dp/B0C88BW4R2\niHeart: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-the-peoples-recorder-117528281/

SUMMARY:Salon Reading Series: “The Body” @ Turbine Flats
DESCRIPTION:Each Salon Reading Series event features a reading of a play followed by a moderated discussion of the play’s themes and how these themes apply to the community. The theme for 2024-25 is “Hold On.” This theme will explore concepts of holding on and letting go. \nThe Salon Reading Series is free and open to the public\, with two readings each week: \n\nthe first on Sunday afternoon at 2pm in the Turbine Flats Resonator Gallery at 2124 Y St\nthe second Wednesday evening at 6:30pm  in the Eastmont Living’s theater space at 6315 O St in Lincoln.\n\nThe Body\nby Steve Mould\nDirected by Timothy W Scholl \nWhile mom is away\, Joe is determined to be the best dad ever for his stepdaughter Abby. But a giant crate appears on their doorstep\, and Abby and Joe work to decipher its mysterious contents – a doll with no face\, and an instruction manual with no words. The deeper they delve into this package\, the more it threatens their family’s tenuous emotional equilibrium. Was this doll sent to strengthen their relationship? Or is it a harbinger of a more disturbing truth? Part domestic drama\, part surreal thriller\, The Body lives in that space between reality and dreams\, where the things that haunt us most come from within. \nFor more information\, visit the Angels Theatre Company Salon Reading Series website.

SUMMARY:Virtual Winter Lecture Series 2025: Envisioning A Resilient Future
DESCRIPTION:The Unitarian Church of Lincoln is hosting a series of virtual lectures at 7 p.m. central on Sunday evenings. The lectures are free via Zoom and will be posted on YouTube afterwards. For more information about receiving the Zoom link and viewing the lectures\, visit the Virtual Winter Lecture Series website. \nGovernments around the world have responded with different degrees of commitment to carbon reduction\, made at the annual climate-change summits. As individuals\, we frequently perceive the urgent threat of climate change with a sense of helplessness\, feeling that our individual actions may lack the capacity to effect meaningful change. This series seeks to transcend the conventional focus on carbon reduction by offering a vision of hope that emphasizes community-building solutions while addressing critical challenges related to shelter\, food security\, and sustainability. The activists and experts in the final panel will inform us on local issues and how we can each play a part in resolving them. \nFebruary 16 – Dr. Barb Mayes Boustead will provide an overview from her perspective of a career in climate\, weather\, and communication. \nBarb Mayes Boustead is a meteorologist and climatologist. She received her Ph.D. in Natural Resources: Climate Assessment and Impacts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a dissertation titled\, “The hard winter of 1880-1881: Climatological context and communication via a Laura Ingalls Wilder narrative\,” and her forthcoming nonfiction book Wilder Weather draws further into what we can learn from the weather and climate of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books and life. She has served as an author for the 4th and 5th National Climate Assessments. \nFebruary 23 – Dr. Tim Crews will speak on regenerative agriculture. \nTim Crews is the Chief Scientist and directs the International Initiative at The Land Institute in Salina\, Kansas. He pursued a doctorate degree at Cornell\, carried out a post-doc fellowship at Stanford\, and developed an agroecology program at Prescott College in Northern Arizona. A significant amount of Tim’s research on perennial grains has focused on topics closely tied to climate change adaptation and mitigation. \nMarch 2 – Dr. John Ikerd will speak briefly on sustainable economics and then hold a conversation with Prof. Charles Francis on the topic. \nJohn Ikerd was raised on a small dairy farm in southwest Missouri and received his Ph.D. degree in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri. He worked in private industry for a time before moving to academia. He retired from the University of Missouri in early 2000 and has maintained an active writing and speaking schedule since retirement. He has published extensively on economic sustainability. \nCharles A. Francis is Professor emeritus Agronomy & Horticulture\, with expertise and teaching experience in agroecology\, farming systems\, and global food and equity issues. \nMarch 9 – Dr. Elizabeth Sawin will speak on multisolving and engage with Peter Hind and Marc Shkolnick on Lincoln’s Low Income Energy Efficiency Rental Rehab Program. \nElizabeth Sawin is the Founder and Director of the Multisolving Institute. A biologist with a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, she co-founded Climate Interactive in 2010 and led the scientific team that offered the first assessment of the sufficiency of country pledges to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Dr. Sawin is an expert on solutions that address climate change while also improving health\, well-being\, and economic vitality. \nPeter Hind is the Director of Lincoln Urban Development. \nMarc Shkolnick has served as Manager of Energy Services at Lincoln Electric System for more than 17 years. SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: MK Chavez

Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nThis workshop will explore how hybrid poetry serves as a powerful tool for self-exploration and expression.
