SUMMARY:In Search of the Signers Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On July 4\, 1776\, the Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. Collectors of early United States history long pursued a complete set of signatures of the 56 men who boldly signed the document. Omaha’s first real estate agent\, Byron Reed\, assembled one of the nation’s most important collections of coinage and manuscripts. Reed also sought a signature from each signer\, and today\, the Byron Reed Collection includes documents related to 49 of the 56 signers. \nThe Durham Museum is proud to preserve and feature it in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States. In Search of the Signers includes original letters\, receipts and other documents from the Byron Reed Collection tied to the Declaration’s signers\, as well as a reproduction of John Trumbull’s iconic painting\, “Declaration of Independence.” \nThe Durham Museum is open Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.\, Wednesday – Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday noon – 4 p.m.\, – visit museum website to confirm hours. \nAdmission: Adults: $17*\, Seniors (62+): $14*\, Military/Veteran: $14*\, Children (ages 3 – 12): $10*\n*PLUS TAX\nMembers & children 2 years and under FREE

DESCRIPTION:The free monthly Nebraska Poets Reading Series highlights the talent of Nebraska poets and invites discussion with audience members. Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nMark Sanders’ poetry explores the grit of the Great Plains with the tenderness of memory and the human heart. Join us for an evening of poems that reflect on home\, time\, and the ways we grow into our best selves. \nMark Sanders is a Nebraska native\, born in Creighton and raised on the eastern rim of the Sandhills at Ord. Among his books of poetry are The Suicide (1988)\, Before We Lost Our Ways (1996)\, Here in the Big Empty (2006)\, Conditions of Grace: New and Selected Poems (2011)\, Landscapes\, with Horses (2018)\, and In a Good Time (2019).  The latter two books received Nebraska Book Awards; Landscapes\, with Horses was awarded the 2019 Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.  His edited works include A Sandhills Reader: 30 Years of Great Writing from the Great Plains and The Weight of the Weather: Regarding the Poetry of Ted Kooser\, both recipients of the Nebraska Book Award\, in 2016 and 2018 respectively.  In 2007\, he was awarded the Mildred Bennett Award for fostering Nebraska’s literary heritage.  His most recent book is Homecoming Parade:  Memoir  (2024)\, and his next book of poems\, The Messiah Horse:  Poems…

She focuses on anti-colonial African cinema and the work of visual artists across the Black diaspora\, with a particular interest in the experimental work of women filmmakers. \nMOTHER TIME: Measuring ourselves within the landscape brings together photographers Rachel Cox and Rose Marie Cromwell\, whose distinct yet overlapping practices explore the complexities of closeness—emotional\, physical\, and spatial. \nMiatta Kawinzi: An Alphabet of Unfolding is a multi-gallery exhibition that explores hybridity\, memory\, and sustenance through mixed-media works\, sculpture\, video\, and text.

DESCRIPTION:Renowned author and historian Richard Norton Smith will speak about Willa Cather\, My Mortal Enemy\, and Cather’s enduring place in American literature. Registration is required to receive an event link. \nRichard Norton Smith is an author\, historian\, biographer\, and former director of five presidential libraries\, including the Herbert Hoover\, Dwight D. Eisenhower\, Ronald Reagan\, and the Gerald R. Ford; the founding executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum; and founding director of the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas. \nThe Willa Cather Author Series is a free program that features mostly virtual but occasional in-person authors who explore humanities topics related to Willa Cather\, Great Plains history\, and art across a variety of styles and genres. The author series was conceived as a way to connect Cather to contemporary writers\, as well as provide an accessible and inclusive space where readers can talk directly with writers about their work. Participating authors discuss how they create their work\, thematic connections within and outside of their texts\, and how their writing depicts shared experiences. Each author series event is designed to include a prepared discussion with the moderator and author(s)\, as well as ample time for audience Q&A.

DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nBreak from the expected and write toward the marvelous. Through surrealist poems and playful prompts\, this generative workshop helps poets tap the unconscious\, challenge repression\, and unlock bolder\, more imaginative work. \nKemi Alabi is the author of Against Heaven (Graywolf Press\, 2022)\, selected by Claudia Rankine as winner of the Academy of American Poets First Book Award. The collection was a Kate Tufts Discovery Award finalist\, Chicago Review of Books Award winner\, and one of New York Public Library’s Best Books of 2022\, among other honors. Alabi’s poems have appeared in The Atlantic\, The Nation\, Poetry\, Boston Review\, the Grammy-nominated album “Difficult Grace\,” and elsewhere. Alabi is co-editor of The Echoing Ida Collection (Feminist Press\, 2021)\, an anthology of Black reproductive justice writing. They’ve spent over a decade building narrative power for trans and queer bodily autonomy\, most recently as the 2024-2025 Feminist in Residence at Northwestern University. Alabi is currently the inaugural Beloit Poetry Journal Iron Mouth Curatorial Fellow. Born in Wisconsin on a Sunday in July\, they now live in Chicago\, IL.

SUMMARY:Local Community Screening and Discussion of "Dawes County U.S.A."
DESCRIPTION:The documentary film Dawes County\, U.S.A. takes place in Northwestern Nebraska where we become acquainted with the lives of generational ranchers. As economic and cultural realities make this way of life increasingly difficult to sustain\, the film explores the layered history of the region\, where pioneer settlement and Native displacement remain intertwined. The presence of this history is followed in the truck stop cafe\, the historical museum that once served as a military base\, through ranchers who inherited land from initial settlers\, and through the animals who inhabit the land themselves. Here\, the camera listens without an aim to posit opinion but to understand and question. By staying awhile in this place where an inch of rain is a blessing\, where trees are sparse\, where a state border divides the same landscape that used to be free; if we spend time with its inhabitants\, what can we learn about the past and future contained in the present? What does it mean to belong to a place that cannot truly be owned. \nThe runtime of the film is 35 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A discussion with the filmmaker Kate Peddicord\, local ranch historian Steve Cleveland\, and Lakota author Tracy Hauff. The talk will be moderated by Chadron State College Assistant Professor of History\, Sam Herley. \nThis community screening is presented free of charge in partnership with the Dawes County Historical Museum and the C.F. Coffee Gallery. Refreshments provided by C.F. Coffee Gallery.
