DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Renae Hunt \nLocation: Norfolk Public Library\, Room B/C \nThe Corps of Discovery was a fascinating group of individuals. But there were four members of the corps that were “valuable” but not paid. Hunt discusses these four members and tells stories of their adventures. She also dispels a few myths about these members. This program is appropriate for all ages \nRenae Hunt is a native Nebraska farm girl. She graduated from Stromsburg High School and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Utah State University. She attended Gallaudet University for the Deaf in Washington\, D.C.\, and is a qualified American Sign Language interpreter. She has been an active historical re-enactor and worked as a museum educator for several years. She traveled on the Mormon Trail in 1997\, and followed the Lewis and Clark Trail as a graduate student in summer 2003. In 2002\, she co-founded Traveling Historical Programs Inc.\, which presented hands-on living history programs and has done educational programs in a tri-state area. She has also been a visiting professor at several colleges and universities

SUMMARY:But\, Who Lived Here in 1491? Indigenous Archeology in Nebraska
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rob Bozell \nLocation: Norfolk Public Library\, Room A \nIndigenous people have lived in what we call Nebraska for at least 13\,000 years and probably longer. Their story is much richer than what history books have taught us about the past several centuries. Over 97 precent of Indigenous history is only revealed through oral traditions and archeology. For much of that period\, people were relatively nomadic hunter-gatherers leaving a fragile archeological record. About 1500 years ago\, groups began experimenting with agriculture and building permanent homes and towns that remain as spectacular buried archeological sites. In the mid 1700s\, Indigenous culture began to change dramatically though colonialism. Archeology also helps to tell that tumultuous story of challenge and survival. \nRob Bozell is a lifelong Nebraska currently living in Omaha. He earned BA and MA degrees in Anthropology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has spent over 40 years as an archeologist and most of that working at the History Nebraska\, State Archeology Office. Bozell retired at the end of 2021 but continues to consult on various research and historic preservation projects in Nebraska and surrounding states. His professional interests include past foodways\, fur trade archeology\, and working with Indigenous tribes on repatriation and historic preservation.

DESCRIPTION:Big Elk or Ongpatonga\, was chief of the Omaha Tribe during a key time in America’s expansion through the Great Plains.  With U.S. acquisition of land and the increase of homesteading\, the lifestyle for First Peoples was threatened. Big Elk sought ways to protect his tribe and their culture from obliteration. He created alliances to protect his people and prepare for a future that he thought depended on a closer relationship with the United States. \nBig Elk will be portrayed by his direct descendant\, Taylor Keen. Fans of Nebraska Chautauqua may recall Keen as Chief Standing Bear during “Free Land? 1862 and the Shaping of Modern America” 2012-2016\, and again at last year’s “What Connects Us” Chautauqua. A former HN board member\, Keen is a full-time instructor at Creighton University and the author of the new book “Rediscovering America: Sacred Geography\, the Ancient Above: Jessica Downing-Ford as Abigail Adams. DESCRIPTION:A pre-Chautauqua event! \nFeaturing Dan Holtz and Gary Zalud \nSee Dan and Gary live on the Free Stage at the Scotts Bluff County Fair in Mitchell! \nDan Holtz is a recently retired professor of English at Peru State College\, where he taught from 1987 to 2016. He is the recipient of the 2000 Nebraska State College System Teaching Excellence Award and the 2015 Addison E. Sheldon Award for the preservation and interpretation of Nebraska history. He is also a past president of the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Historical Society and currently serves as a member of the Nebraska 150 Foundation\, a statewide committee involved in planning Nebraska’s Sesquicentennial celebration/commemoration. He has performed and presented programs for civic\, historical\, and literary organizations across Nebraska as well as at the Nebraska State Capitol\, the Nebraska State Historical Society\, the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer\, Scottsbluff National Monument and the John Neihardt Center. Additionally\, he has appeared at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and at the Bob Devaney Center for the state quarter dedication ceremony in 2006. In June of 2016\, he released his second CD\, “All Original\, All Nebraska\,” a collection songs he wrote about people\, places\, and events in Nebraska.

SUMMARY:Early Japanese Settlers in Nebraska
DESCRIPTION:Although the majority of Japanese immigrants settled in Hawaii\, California\, and the West Coast\, some pushed further inland\, to work on the railroad and coal mines\, ending up in Nebraska. A few died from illness\, the Spanish Flu\, train accidents\, their gravestones written in Japanese characters. Others returned to Japan or moved to larger cities. But some stayed\, put down roots\, raised families\, farmed\, published newspapers\, opened businesses\, worked in meat packing plants\, laundries\, pool halls\, and restaurants. This talk will illustrate their journey from Japan\, and some of the various paths that brought them here\, as well as the transitions they made along the way. \nSpeaker: Julie Ushio\, a member of the Advisory Board at Japanese Hall\, Legacy of the Plains Museum\, in Gering. She grew up in Alliance\, Nebraska\, where her Japanese grandparents settled.

SUMMARY:Women's Rights and the Saucy Mrs. Adams
DESCRIPTION:Five years after Abigail Smith married John Adams\, the American colonies adopted the British law of coverture. This law held that no female person had a legal identity. Married women owned nothing—not even the clothes on their backs. More importantly\, they had no rights over their own bodies\, or custody of the children they bore. \nAbigail’s marriage was based on mutual respect\, and she understood how lucky she was. She witnessed families torn apart by a husband’s drunkenness\, lack of employment\, temper\, and/or money mismanagement. Abigail’s famous ‘remember the ladies’ letter to her husband in which she implores him to “not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands\,” speaks directly to the law of coverture. This was the women’s rights issue of her time—remnants of which still exist in the year 2024. \nPresented by Chautauqua Scholar Jessica Downing-Ford

Angel Vigil describes the role of the Spanish/Mexican vaquero in the establishment of\ntraditional cowboy and ranching practices in the west\, placing the historical and fictional lore of the origins of the American cowboy in the historical context of the vaquero\, the true first cowboy. \nPresented by Chautauqua scholar Angel Vigil.

Doane was responsible for 240 miles of railroad and telegraph from Plattsmouth to Kearney. He was the co-founder of the town of Crete\, Nebraska\, founder of the first bank in Crete and with the association of the Congregational church\, and founder of Doane College in 1872\, so named in his honor. \nCol.
