You will be notified when your  free book is ready for pick up at the Norfolk Arts Center. Others may be able to check out the book from the Norfolk Public Library. \nBook discussion on July 31 at 10 a.m. \nFilm screening on July 31 at 4 a.m. \nSynopsis: Set in the Deep South\, this book tells the story of the great coon dog\, Sounder\, and the poor sharecroppers who own him. During the difficult years of the nineteenth century South\, an African-American boy and his poor family rarely have enough to eat. Each night\, the boy’s father takes their dog\, Sounder\, out to look for food and the man grows more desperate by the day. When food suddenly appears on the table one morning\, it seems like a blessing. But the sheriff and his deputies are not far behind. The ever-loyal Sounder remains determined to help the family he loves as hard times bear down on them. “Sounder” shows the courage\, love\, and faith that bind an African-American family together despite the racism and inhumanity they face. \nThe movie Sounder will  be livestreamed at the library using the Norfolk Public Library’s subscription to KANOPY.

These cowboys were the first Europeans to ride the open ranges and sleep under the stars. They learned to tame the wild horses of the plains and delivered vast herds of cattle across great distances\, mastering riding\, roping and other skills. \nAngel Vigil is a Colorado Heritage Artist storyteller.who is the author of six award-winning books on Hispanic and Western culture and arts. Vigil’s portrayal of El Vaquero will give color to the enduring American myth of a self-reliant cowboy riding tall in the saddle with an independent spirit representing all that is good in the American character.

SUMMARY:Women's Rights and the "Saucy" Mrs. Adams
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jessica Downing-Ford \nNorfolk Public Library Room A \nAbigail Adams \nFive years after Abigail Smith married John Adams\, the American colonies adopted the British law of coverture. This law held that no female person had a legal identity. At birth she was “covered” by her father’s identity and\, when she married\, by her husband’s. The husband and wife became one person: the husband. Married women owned nothing—not even the clothes on their backs. More importantly\, they had no rights over their own bodies\, or custody of the children they bore. Abigail and John’s marriage was based on mutual admiration and respect\, and Abigail understood how lucky she was. She witnessed families torn apart by husband’s drunkenness\, temper\, lack of employment and/or money mismanagement. Women in these unhappy unions were left to tolerate humiliation\, mistreatment\, and physical abuse along with their daily struggle to feed their families\, stay housed\, and stay safe. Abigail’s famous ‘remember the ladies’ letter to her husband in which she implores him to “not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands\,” speaks directly to the law of coverture. This was the women’s rights issue of her time—remnants of which still exist in the year 2022. \nJessica Downing-Ford \nJessica has always enjoyed being in the spotlight. While growing up in Braintree\, Massachusetts\, she enjoyed gymnastics\, dancing\, and acting. She attended Emerson College where she graduated in ’93 with a BFA in Dance. Jessica forgot her passion for performing and had large gaps between stage productions after becoming a mother. It was during a trip back to Massachusetts in 2014 that she caught a glimpse of her soon-to-be-heroine. She attended a reenactment of the signing of the Declaration at the Adams’ National Park on the 4th of July and was brought to tears by a reading of Abigail’s “Remember the Ladies” letter. She fell in love not only with Abigail but with the art of Chautauqua; she jokes that she’d been waiting her whole life to find an avenue for her talents. Jessica enjoys bringing Abigail to life for history classes in western Colorado as well as coaching students through the Young Chautauqua program with Colorado Humanities. She continues to research and visit Abigail’s historical sites as she deepens her understanding of this complex\, amazingly brave\, female patriot.

As the first state admitted after the Civil War\, Nebraska not only faced the politics within the state\, but Reconstruction politics as well. \nDr. Sara Crook is professor emerita of political science and history at Peru State College\, receiving many scholarly and teaching awards during her tenure. Dr. Crook has also served as chair of the Humanities Nebraska board\, president of the Nebraska State Historical Society board\, chair of the Nebraska Sesquicentennial Commission\, and is the current chair of the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission. She also is a member of the Humanities Nebraska Speakers Bureau. \nDr. Crook’s love of Nebraska history and politics goes back to her childhood. As a farm girl growing up in a country church and attending a one-room country school in the Platte River Valley in the 1950s and 60s\, she developed a deep appreciation for Nebraska and its people that continues to this day.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Linda Garcia \nLocation: Norfolk Public Library\, Room A \nAn experienced storyteller\, Garcia-Perez draws on her experiences as a young girl in Omaha’s Mexican-American barrio. Her stories convey a universal message of humor\, wonder and tradition. \nLinda M. Garcia-Perez\, a 1971 College of St. Mary graduate and a retired Children’s Librarian\, is an artist\, instructor\, and storyteller of Latino arts and culture. Linda is with the Nebraska Arts Council’s Artists in Schools and Communities roster; Nebraska StoryArts Board; Nebraska Humanities Council’s Speakers Bureau; City of Omaha Public Art Commissioner; and occasional instructor and docent with the Joslyn Art Museum. Linda and her husband\, Jose\, have an extensive collection of Mexican folk arts and literature and are co-founders of the Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands.
