SUMMARY:Early Japanese Settlers in Nebraska
DESCRIPTION:Although the majority of Japanese immigrants settled in Hawaii\, California\, and the West Coast\, some pushed further inland\, to work on the railroad and coal mines\, ending up in Nebraska. A few died from illness\, the Spanish Flu\, train accidents\, their gravestones written in Japanese characters. Others returned to Japan or moved to larger cities. But some stayed\, put down roots\, raised families\, farmed\, published newspapers\, opened businesses\, worked in meat packing plants\, laundries\, pool halls\, and restaurants. This talk will illustrate their journey from Japan\, and some of the various paths that brought them here\, as well as the transitions they made along the way. \nSpeaker: Julie Ushio\, a member of the Advisory Board at Japanese Hall\, Legacy of the Plains Museum\, in Gering. She grew up in Alliance\, Nebraska\, where her Japanese grandparents settled.

SUMMARY:Women's Rights and the Saucy Mrs. Adams
DESCRIPTION:Five years after Abigail Smith married John Adams\, the American colonies adopted the British law of coverture. This law held that no female person had a legal identity. Married women owned nothing—not even the clothes on their backs. More importantly\, they had no rights over their own bodies\, or custody of the children they bore. \nAbigail’s marriage was based on mutual respect\, and she understood how lucky she was. She witnessed families torn apart by a husband’s drunkenness\, lack of employment\, temper\, and/or money mismanagement. Abigail’s famous ‘remember the ladies’ letter to her husband in which she implores him to “not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands\,” speaks directly to the law of coverture. This was the women’s rights issue of her time—remnants of which still exist in the year 2024. \nPresented by Chautauqua Scholar Jessica Downing-Ford

We will look at black settlements in the plains and the causes for their ultimate demise. DESCRIPTION:Big Elk was chief of the Omaha Tribe during the 1800s. As the expanding U.S. threatened First Peoples\, he sought ways to protect his tribe and their culture from obliteration. He created alliances and attempted to prepare for a future that he thought depended on a closer relationship with the U.S. \nChief Big Elk will be presented by his great-great-great-great-great-grandson\, Taylor Keen. \nAudience members will be able to ask questions first of Chief Big Elk and then of Taylor Keen.

DESCRIPTION:A bed turning is quilt show where multiple quilts are stacked on a bed and removed one by one\, with a presenter sharing the history\, techniques\, and stories behind each piece. Bed Turnings started as a way for women to showcase their finest needlework to neighbors. This Bed Turning is a way for the Hastings Museum to showcase some of our quilts and textiles with our neighbors.

SUMMARY:Sorting Out Race exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Every day thrift stores across America receive donations of objects that display racial imagery— antique advertising cards\, collectible salt-and-pepper shakers\, vintage children’s books\, and mugs with sports team mascots. Are these objects harmless reminders of historical attitudes or do they continue to perpetuate negative stereotypes about race? Should thrift stores sell these objects? Or should they be “sorted out” of the resale environment and discarded? \nSorting Out Race arose out of a desire to divert artifacts with racial content from thrift stores to an exhibit that would generate a healthy community conversation about racial stereotypes past and present in order to heighten awareness of our continuing struggles with race. \nExhibit courtesy of the Kaufmann Museum at Bethel College. \n\n\n\n\nMuseum hours: Monday – Wednesday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Thursday – Friday 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.\, Sunday 1 to 6 p.m.\nRegular museum admission $9 for age 13 and up\, $8 for seniors 60+\, $7 children 3-12.

SUMMARY:Col. Thomas Doane: Massachusetts Engineer to Nebraska Civic and Educational Leader
DESCRIPTION:Step back to 1872 and experience a Chautauqua portrayal of Thomas Doane\, the chief engineer of the B & M Railroad and famous Hoosac Tunnel Project. Doane was responsible for 240 miles of railroad and telegraph from Plattsmouth to Kearney. He was the co-founder of the town of Crete\, Nebraska\, founder of the first bank in Crete and with the association of the Congregational church\, and founder of Doane College in 1872\, so named in his honor. \nCol. Thomas Doane will be presented by Thomas King.

SUMMARY:Black Homesteaders in the Great Plains of America
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Eric Ewing\, Executive Director of Great Plains Black History Museum \nAcross every state in the Great Plains\, African American homesteaders claimed land\, built communities\, and shaped a distinct chapter of American history. Though their numbers were smaller than those of the vast wave of White settlers\, Black homesteaders established homes\, cultivated farms\, and created a sense of place and belonging entirely their own. \nThe Homestead Act opened land ownership to male citizens\, widows\, single women\, and immigrants who pledged to become citizens. With the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1866 and the Fourteenth Amendment\, African Americans were also guaranteed the right to participate fully in this opportunity. Thousands seized it. \nBlack homesteaders used the promise of land to build new lives rooted in independence. They worked and owned the soil beneath their feet\, supported their families\, and ensured their children received an education. They organized churches\, schools\, and civic institutions\, nurturing rich cultural and religious traditions. In governing their own affairs\, they pursued the full rights and responsibilities of freedom—asserting their place as equal citizens in the American story.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Beth Dotan\, Research Assistant Professor at the Norman and Bernice Harris Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Nebraska\, Lincoln \nThis program will take a glimpse into the collections of Holocaust survivors who settled in Nebraska and Nebraska WWII servicemen who liberated individuals interned in Nazi concentration camps\, existing under inconceivable conditions. A grave reflection on this period in American history that connects Nebraskans to this global event from over 80 years ago\, their silent experiences are now being shared. Archival materials are now preserved in a digital humanities web project at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln through the work of the Norman and Bernice Center for Judaic Studies and the UNL Center for Digital Research in the Humanities. https://nestoriesofhumanity.unl.edu/  \nIn addition to making the stories available to the public digitally\, the website serves as a teaching tool integrating digital storytelling with state educational standards for secondary classrooms and higher-education research. Dotan will demonstrate how digital methods elevate these stories and how personal archives have provided unexpected historical discovery and networking within our Nebraska community.

SUMMARY:A Chicano Ancestral Perspective of 485 Years of Great Plains History
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: José Garcia and Linda Garcia \nLinda and Jose were each raised by Mexican American parents who grew up in both urban and rural settings\, and who themselves were children of Mexican immigrants.Their deep understanding of the Spanish American experience—from the historical beginnings with the 1541 Coronado Expedition to the Fabled Land of Cibola (a legendary destination kept alive within Omaha’s urban culture) to the experiences of the century-and-a-half movement of Mexican migrant and railroad workers brought into Nebraska—fuels their Chautauqua presentation. The blending of Jose’s visual historical presentation and Linda’s oral storytelling creates a familiarity born within the movement of peoples between cultures and social environments.
