SUMMARY:In Search of the Signers Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On July 4\, 1776\, the Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. Collectors of early United States history long pursued a complete set of signatures of the 56 men who boldly signed the document. Omaha’s first real estate agent\, Byron Reed\, assembled one of the nation’s most important collections of coinage and manuscripts. Reed also sought a signature from each signer\, and today\, the Byron Reed Collection includes documents related to 49 of the 56 signers. \nThe Durham Museum is proud to preserve and feature it in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States. In Search of the Signers includes original letters\, receipts and other documents from the Byron Reed Collection tied to the Declaration’s signers\, as well as a reproduction of John Trumbull’s iconic painting\, “Declaration of Independence.” \nThe Durham Museum is open Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.\, Wednesday – Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday noon – 4 p.m.\, – visit museum website to confirm hours. \nAdmission: Adults: $17*\, Seniors (62+): $14*\, Military/Veteran: $14*\, Children (ages 3 – 12): $10*\n*PLUS TAX\nMembers & children 2 years and under FREE

SUMMARY:We the People: The Evolution of Voting Rights in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dianne Bystrom \nSponsored by the Hastings Public Library \nAfter this week’s elections\, join Dianne Bystrom at the Hastings Public Library for a fascinating look at voting rights in the United States. As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026\, this presentation describes how voting rights have evolved over time through the 15th\, 19th and 26th amendments to the U.S. Constitution\, which extended voting rights to African American men in 1870\, women in 1920 and 18-20 year-olds in 1971; the Voting Rights Act of 1965; which removed discriminatory barriers to voting; and recent actions by the U.S. Supreme Court\, Congress and state legislatures. It includes statistics on who has voted in recent elections by age\, sex and race/ethnicity as well as information on how to be a registered and informed voter. Dianne is adding fresh information to this program based on this year’s election cycle\, so don’t miss it!
