Sower Award in the Humanities
Humanities Nebraska will present the annual Sower Award in the Humanities at the Governor’s Lecture in the Humanities on October 3, 2017 at the Holland Performing Arts Center in Omaha.. Anyone may nominate an individual who has made a significant contribution to public understanding of the humanities in Nebraska using the form available to the right.
The 2016 Sower Award was presented to Marian Andersen of Omaha at the benefit dinner/reception immediately prior to the 21st Annual Governor’s Lecture in the Humanities on September 27, 2016 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts in Lincoln.
Marian Andersen has been called a “cultural trailblazer” by many. She contributed heavily to the understanding of the humanities in Nebraska through the combination of her time, expertise and resources by serving the boards of the University of Nebraska Foundation, Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross, Nebraska Shakespeare, the Museum of Nebraska Art, Nebraska Arts Council and Nebraska Humane Society. Nationally, she became a vice chairman for the American Red Cross and a director for the Public Broadcasting System. She is an emeritus trustee with Doane College and the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation, a former governor of the Joslyn Art Museum, and a director emeritus for the Literacy Center of the Midlands and the Mid America Arts Alliance. Mrs. Andersen is also a legacy donor to the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, a member of the United Way of the Midlands Tocqueville Women’s Initiative, and the Nebraska Press Women’s Hall of Fame and University of Nebraska-Lincoln journalism college is named in her honor.
