In Memory: Michael Cartwright, 1943-2015

AlumCartwright-BWFormer Humanities Nebraska board member Michael Cartwright died suddenly in May. After earning a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he became an English professor at California State University-Bakersfield, where he remained for 13 years, becoming Chairman of the English Department and Assistant to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. He returned to Nebraska to teach at Chadron State College as Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2005, he was awarded the Chadron State College Teaching Excellence Award.

Mike was instrumental in helping revitalize the struggling Mari Sandoz Heritage Society. A writer of fiction and non-fiction, he directed the Nebraska Book Festival for three years. He also served on the boards of the Nebraska Humanities Council, the Newblom Foundation, and Nebraska Public Radio, and he was an elected Commissioner of the Upper Niobrara-White Natural Resources District for 12 years. He also recorded magazines and novels for the Nebraska Library Commission Talking Books and Braille program.
